Lamin Fofana, Prelude: To Become Liquid

Saturday, October 17, 2026
École du soir Workroom
195 Chrystie Street
New York NY 10002

Doors open: 6.30 PM
Performance: 7.00 PM – 10 PM

École du soir is pleased to host Preludes: To Become Liquid, a performance by musician Lamin Fofana. It takes place as a listening and collective reading program within an immersive sound environment informed and inspired by the reading, the density and the richness of the concepts, histories and possibilities of Black Studies. The evening will mark the release of Corpus Perdu, Fofana’s new album emerging from his ongoing engagement with the relationship between sound and text

In To Become Liquid, Fofana offers a multisensory listening space in which performance, collective reading, and open dialogue converge, with the aim of generating an environment of critical reverie. Throughout the evening, pages or fragments from works by seminal historians, poets, and theorists including W. E. B. Du Bois, Sylvia Wynter, and Aimé Césaire are circulated among the audience. Everyone is invited to read aloud at any moment, and to cultivate an active, collaborative space that resists disengaged modes of reception and fosters instead a shared and attentive participation.

First presented at Hangar Barcelona in 2026, To Become Liquid stages in space Fofana’s forthcoming album Corps Perdu, as a prelude into an ongoing trilogy of sound works from a long-term sonic formation provisionally titled Surrounding World.

The performance is co-presented with Lamin Fofana’s record label BLACK STUDIES, and it launches Fofana’s and BLACK STUDIES inaugural residency at École du Soir Workroom, playing host to mutual collaborations between Fofana and École du soir that will extend into convening, production, programming, and learning experiments.

A film by Louis Massiah and Monica Henriquez

The African Film Institute is pleased to invite you to e-flux Screening Room on Thursday, October 8 at 6pm for a screening of TCB – The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing (2025, 105 minutes), directed by Louis Massiah and Monica Henriquez, marking a return of the film following its national and international festival run.

Structured as a series of classes in cultural organizing, TCB – The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing reconstructs the life of a woman whose literary works and film collaborations became a catalyzing force in 20th-century political movements. Toni Morrison, Nikky Finney, and filmmaker Haile Gerima are among those who testify to Bambara's humor, fierce commitment to collective action, and gift for galvanizing artists into community work. The film is a warm and stylish portrait that makes a compelling case for why her approach to activism feels as urgent now as it did then.

This program continues Two Thousand Seasons, the 2026 programming of the African Film Institute, driven by methods of collective study and collaborative action, and pointing to alternative sites where memory is held and where learning is made. Moving between the film image and practices beyond the screen, the programming samples transitional ways of recording histories and practicing commemoration, foregrounding inspiration as both a lesson and a tool for loosening the grip of manipulation characteristic of the world today.
